Wintergreen oil is derived from the leaves of the American intergreen (or Gaultheia procumbens), a bushy shrub native to north eastern North America. It is used both for flavouring (especially in chewing gum) and for treatment of muscular aches and pains. It contains methyl salicylate, which is readily absorbed by the skin and reduces pain and increases circulation and blood flow. It also relaxes muscles, easing tension and spasms.
